Oh Overwhelm

Source:Management Craft

Try as I might, I did not get it done
I'm annoyed by others all smiles and fun.
Tired, frazzled, unable to think
Do I need a lobotomy or just a stiff drink?
Oh well, oh overwhelm.

Am I dense, am I slow, am I poor?
Why is this work I loved such a bore?
I hope for a cyclone to take it all away
The stacks, the people, the bosses, the fray.
Oh well, oh overwhelm.

The problems number too many
Sane employees, are there any?
I want to be good, want to do well
I’ve ended up in manager’s hell.
Oh well, oh overwhelm.

Now wait one cotton pickin’ moment
Musn't allow this self-inflicted torment.
It’s just a day and just a job
Not something deserving my sob.
Oh well, oh overwhelm.

I’ll shake it off, reject the funk
Sit in peace, chant like a monk.
These thoughts of failure I’ll abandon
So bring it on, bring it on!
Oh well, oh overwhelm

I thought this poem relates well to my last post You HAVE TO Love What You Do

You HAVE TO Love What You Do

Guy Kawasaki's post onTen questions with Donald Trump caught my eye over the week-end. I really liked the choice of questions raised by Kawasaki. I have to applaud Donald Trump's answer to the last question,
Q:"TV is TV, real life is real life: What’s the most important real-life advice you can give to an entrepreneur?"
A: "You have to love what you do. Without passion, great success is hard to come by"…

I agree, with Donald Trump whole heartedly on that one.

Now, allow me to add my 2 cents to his answer.
* Most people know what they don't like to do. But do they know what they love to do?

* It is easy to say, "You have to love what you do". How many of us are quipped to do so? Real life is real life! Most of the time, you are surrounded by complicated practicalities, which prevent you from doing what you love to do. Is this true for you?

* Does that mean everyone who isn't successful is not doing what they love?

Please feel free to leave a comment with your 2 cents :-)

A new vacuum cleaner salesman knocked on the door on the first house of the street. A tall lady answered the door.
Before she could speak, the enthusiastic salesman barged into the living

onto the carpet.

"Madam, if I could not clean this up with the use of this new powerful

Do you need chilli sauce or ketchup with that" asked the lady.
The bewildered salesman asked, "Why, madam?"

"We just moved in, & there's no electricity in the house!"

Dale Carnegie Guide To A Happier YOU

I didn't choose to write this post because I am a 100% happy person. Just like you, I too have my share of problems (or rather challenges!). Just like you, I have gone through many hardships to be where I am today.

Over the years, many people have helped me "get out of bed in the morning, when I didn't want to!". I am going make public one such person; Mr. Dale Carnegie. I have never met him. I have never spoken to him. He never existed in my era! Yet, he is one of those people who has influenced me to be the person I am today.

Oh well, if still don't know who he is…..
Dale Carnegie was an American writer and the developer of famous courses in self-improvement, corporate training, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
In this post, I will share with you some of his inspirational truisms (along side my two cents!). I hope that it will guide you, to be a happier YOU.

Did you ever see an unhappy horse? Did you ever see a bird that has the blues? One reason why birds and horses are not unhappy is because they are not trying to impress other birds and horses.~Dale Carnegie

Yes, I believe it is a human tendency -the need to impress others. You want to impress your parents, family, boss, friends, neighbors etc I admit, I am no different. To a certain extent, I don't think its wrong. If what we didn't impress anyone, would we want to do more?
I feel that we try to impress everyone and as a result, end up unhappy. So in a way, our happiness is dependent on others; The things they say and do. What you really need to ask yourself is, do we need to impress everyone? Would it be sufficient, to impress ONLY a few people that matter the most to us?

Remember, happiness doesn't depend upon who you are or what you have; it depends solely upon what you think.~Dale Carnegie

Think about it. How is it that two people from related backgrounds end up so different? Is it the people they come across? Can intelligence, luck and hereditary explain it? There are many stories of people overcoming every possible obstacle and still succeeding.
A research article over at MSNBC tilted Do you have what it takes to lead a happier life? suggests that we should think of three good things that happened within the day and analyze why they occurred.
Some days I really have to apply myself to find three good things! However, I have being practicing this since the day I read the article and found it to be rewarding. Try it out yourself. Can you steer your thoughts, towards happiness?

Feeling sorry for yourself, and your present condition, is not only a waste of energy but the worst habit you could possibly have.~Dale Carnegie

Our journey to the lost destination is never a smooth ride to say the least. It could be a bad day at work, an argument with a friend, relationship problems … the list goes on. Life smacks us hard when we least expect it. That's why you need 6 Ways to make you feel good (when the going gets tough)

If you can't sleep, then get up and do something instead of lying there worrying. It's the worry that gets you, not the lack of sleep.~Dale Carnegie

It says it all, doesn't it?

Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.~Dale Carnegie

Mr. Dale Carnegie was born into poverty on a small farm in Missour. In his teens, though still having to get up at 4 a.m. every day to milk his parents' cows, he managed to get educated at the State Teacher's College in Warrensburg.
I can give plenty of examples such as this. In fact, you might have your own stories as well. So don't stop trying. The silver lining may be an inch away. Easier said than done! (I know)

One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming outside our windows today.~Dale Carnegie

I will be happy when …. I get a better job
I will be happy when …. we move to our new house
I will be happy when …. I pay off all my loans

Sounds familiar? We tend to postpone being happy giving all sorts of excuses. I bet if, achieve our goals one day, we will still have plenty of excuses, even then.

We have today. For some, when you realize this, it too late. Don't let that be you.

I decided to add some variation to my already varied blog! This new addition will include links to other useful and thought provoking posts, I stumble upon.

Most of us want to loose weight (I can see you sigh!). May be reducing weight was a New Year resolution for some. Have you followed through? Well then, this link is for you. Rodger Constandse writes a post on Setting Realistic Weight Loss Goals

When you were young, you didn’t even understand the notion of risk. You just did. You ate paint chips off the wall, you tasted the handful of dirt you scooped up in your garden, you stuck your fingers wherever you wanted to, but as time passed and you grew older, you were slowly introduced and taught the notion of risk by others around you and it was as if a square marking your boundaries was slowly painted around you. Soon enough, you stopped risking….. Read the rest of the post on How To Take Risks by Brian Kim.

This post my be a bit too late for my father. However, it could save your health. For those of you who are trying to quite smoking please.. read How to Become an Unusually Happy Non-Smoker

John Wood's Blog: Scientology Opens Prominent New Church in Berlin

Book Excerpt:The Heart Of A Leader By Ken Blanchard

Positive thinkers get positive results because they are not afraid of problems.
Ken Blanchard and Norman Vincent Peale
The Power of Ethical Management

I know the minute you mention the word ‘problem’ the implication is that you are speaking negatively. But some don’t see it that way.

People often asked Norman Vincent Peale, "Don’t you think life would be better if we had fewer problems?" Norman would answer that question by saying, "I’ll be happy to take you to Woodlawn Cemetery because the only people I know who don’t have any problems are dead."

Norman felt it was possible that the more problems you have, the more alive you were. "If you have no problems at all," he would say "you’re in grave jeopardy!" In fact, if you really insisted that you had no problems, he would suggest that you immediately race home, go straight to your bedroom and slam the door. Then get down on your knees and pray: "What’s the matter, Lord? Don’t you trust me anymore? Give me some problems!"

People Come Into Your Life For A Reason, A Season Or A Lifetime

People Come Into Your Life For A Reason, A Season Or A Lifetime
Unknown Author

When you figure out which one it is,
you will know what to do for each person.
When someone is in your life for a REASON. . .
It is usually to meet a need you have expressed.
They have come to assist you through a difficulty,
to provide you with guidance and support,
to aid you physically, emotionally, or spiritually.
They may seem like a godsend, and they are!
They are there for the reason you need them to be.
Then, without any wrongdoing on your part,
or at an inconvenient time, this person will say
or do something to bring the relationship to an end.

Sometimes they die.
Sometimes they walk away.
Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand.
What we must realize is that our need has been met,
our desire fulfilled, their work is done.
The prayer you sent up has been answered.
And now it is time to move on.

Then people come into your life for a SEASON....
Because your turn has come to share, grow, or learn.
They bring you an experience of peace, or make you laugh.
They may teach you something you have never done.
They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy.
Believe it! It is real! But, only for a season.

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons
: things you must build upon in order to have
a solid emotional foundation.
Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person,
and put what you have learned to use in all
other relationships and areas of your life.
It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.

How much of this poem, can you relate to?

10 Questions that Determine your Financial Fitness

Money Matters

December- gifts, holidays, dinners… It sure was a handful. We are into January now, back to routine life and routine spending.

Those of you, who planned your spending wouldn’t probably notice the hole in the wallet. However, for the others, there is still hope.

I read a post at Life Training, which had some useful questions, to shape up your finance fitness. Start exercising ….

#1. Do you pay yourself first? highlights that before you pay any of your bills, you need to set aside a certain amount of money for savings, retirement or investing.

#2. Do you save at least 10% of your income? Um….

#3. Have you set aside a separate emergency fund to cover at least 3-months worth of expenses? True enough, life is double-sided and we need to be prepared to handle the worst of times.

#4. Do you know the exact amount of your debts, as well as the interest rates? At least you know where you stand.

#5. Do you accelerate the payments of your debts? These are the loans, lease etc

#6. Do you have financial goals? This comes under the Ctrl-Alt-Del your life NOW, or you’ll hate yourself later category.

#7. Do you have a record keeping system? Guilty!

#8. Do you live within a budget? Welcome to reality

#9. Do you know your net worth? I am still trying to figure that one out!

#10. Do you put your eggs in different baskets? Which basically means relying only on one form of investment could be a recipe for disaster.

Reading over some of these questions, it did feel like common sense to me. However, when it comes to spending, common sense doesn’t seem to knock on the door! Does that happen only to me? Hm..

What Every Blogger Ought To Know About Outstanding Bloggers

A couple of weeks ago John wrote a post titled Blog Success Awards for 2006, where he applauded a few Outstanding Blogs of 2006. His exact words were, "They were able to find a unique niche in cyberspace and fill a void."
I too have been a regular reader, of some blogs mentioned in his list and acknowledge John’s awards.

These days though, the latest buzz in bloggosphere seems to be the Z-List. I was first introduced to the z-list by The Viral Garden. As I see it, the Z-List is simply a way of promoting "undiscovered" yet outstanding blogs.

The above mentioned articles motivated me to observe, some patterns that distinguish all the outstanding blogs versus the ones that are struggling to take off. Some of it may be obvious to you, I am mentioning them anyway!

#1. Outstanding Bloggers Have A Great Blog Layout
All outstanding blogs have a very simply yet effective user interface. They also have the essential features in the side bar such as subscribing via email or RSS feed, popular posts, Site Search, categories and so much more.

#2. Outstanding Bloggers Write Quality Content
Easier said than done! However, when it comes to outstanding bloggers they establish an area of expertise and write posts within that boundary. They provide the reader with timely and useful posts, with a dash of their own approach of uniqueness. Generally, these posts are comprehensive and complete. I believe they strike the perfect balance between a mix of short and longer posts, with none too long.

#3. Outstanding Bloggers Write Irresistible Headlines
They seem to have consistency in writing irresistible headlines!

As Lorelle meticulously points out.

Your post title is more than just a namesake for your post content. It is a mini-representative of your post content that goes out to announce your post to the world. As a representative, it should speak well of the content it represents. So let’s look at how a post title is used on the web.
1. The post title is often shown with the blog title in the title at the top of your web browser’s title bar.
2. The post title is shown with the blog title in search engine and tag search results on the top line.
3. The post title is the title stored by bookmark managers, social bookmarking services, and other link storage and share methods, which may also include the blog title.
4. Trackbacks from your blog to another blog you link to and vise versa include the blog title and post title in the trackback link.
5. Links and recommendations to your article or post typically feature just the post title or a combination of your blog name and post title.
6. Feeds feature post titles, post titles plus excerpts, or post titles plus full articles. Feed readers often feature feeds by post title in a separate list as well as an additional view of the overall feed.
7. Recent Posts, Related Posts, Most Popular Posts, and similar lists of posts on your blog typically feature just the post title.
8. Feed aggregator services and blogging networks which pull feed excerpts from their featured blogs highlight the post title and blog name prominently, occasionally with a post excerpt.

#4. Outstanding Bloggers Are Great At Interacting With Their Readers
Most often, it can be seen that after each post, they invite people to comment. When they do get comments they acknowledge them with a reply.
From personal experience I know that some even take time to reply to emails as well.

#5. Outstanding Bloggers Post Regularly
Need I say more?

#6. Outstanding Bloggers Links Generously to Others
Blogging itself is a network of linking. Outstanding bloggers are generous with their links to others. These links are usually worthy of the click too!

#7. Outstanding Bloggers Interlink To Their Own Posts
Where relevant, they provide a link to a previous post. I see this approach as a way of making the readers aware of other posts that have been previous written.
In return, the readers are made aware of other quality posts written.

I have shared my incidental gleanings relating to outstanding bloggers today. Do you agree with the me ?Is there anything obvious, that I have left out of this list ?

Local News - Human Rights

The Church of Scientology of Boston has announced an even greater commitment in 2007 to combating human rights violations and increasing awareness through its education program.

Last June, the Church and Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) released a series of public service announcements to bring to life the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 30 or 60-second video spots. Appealing to young and old, these powerful PSAs have now aired on more than 2,200 TV stations, to 280 million people in 60 countries around the world. They have also been playing in colleges, movie theatres, concerts and cable stations throughout
New England.

To spread its message further, YHRI representatives embarked on a world tour covering 60,000 miles last July and August. The tour, “30 Days-30 Events-30 Rights,” began and ended in Los Angeles and visited Canada, eight countries in Europe, seven in Asia as well as Australia, New Zealand and the Fiji Islands. Events were held in each country, where YHRI met with government leaders and officials, human rights organizations, educators, media, students, religious groups and youth groups.

“The keynote of our campaign is education,” stated Gerard Renna “A young person who understands his human rights is starting life with the right values. He will treat people with respect, and he will not tolerate violations of these rights. By teaching youth about human rights, we are creating a generation of human rights activists.”

Additionally 2006 saw the launch of the Human Rights Hero Awards in countries all over the world to recognize outstanding achievements in the promotion of human rights. Local winners were also awarded in Boston and a New England delegation attended the New York event last August. The awards culminated in an international ceremony held in the United Nations headquarters in New York last August. Awardees ranged from a former Army colonel from Uganda who is spearheading activities to bring an end to the use of child soldiers, to a 12-year-old student in Israel who has taken it upon himself to educate his entire school using the YHRI educational tools.

The Church’s Human Rights Department and YHRI have continued to tackle one of the worst human rights abuses-human trafficking. Now a $9.5 billion a year criminal enterprise, it is the fastest growing with an estimated 600,000 to 800,000 victims trafficked across international borders, according to a United Nations news statement of November 2005. Several human trafficking conferences were held or participated in last year, and YHRI also produced an informational flyer about human trafficking for children.

“Working hand in hand with other human rights organizations, we plan to increase public awareness of this appalling human rights abuse. We cannot allow slavery in the 21st century,” said Gerard Renna.

By the close of 2006, 80 Youth for Human Rights groups or chapters existed in 36 countries. The New England chapter is directed by Kelly Riley, a professional singer/songwriter who volunteers her time to help get out this important message and get Youth for Human Rights clubs started.

And Dignity For All

I just completed reading an inspiring book titled, And Dignity For All by James Despian and Jane Bodman Converse.

To me, the book was partly a biography of James Despian, where he gave examples of how he learned and applied leadership traits.

I wonder whether he actually practiced what he preached. Hm.. I guess Caterpillar Inc.'s employees that worked under him will bear witness to that!

Here is the official introduction to the book. Is it worth a read, you decide!

I am not your typical senior executive. I don't have an MBA. I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth. No, this is the story of someone with an unlikely resume f success. I was married when I was 16. I didn’t go to college. What I learned, I learned on the job. I watched and I listened. I read and I asked. I tried and failed. I learned and I tried again.

This book is the story of a lifetime of experiences and the lessons I learned that enabled me to become a true leader of people. I began my career as a swapper in a factory that makes the largest earthmoving equipment in the world. I ended it at the same company- a vice present of a $20 billion corporation. This story includes how we transformed a factory and an entire division into highly profitable leaders in our corporation and industry. It tells you how to do the same in what ever business you find yourself.

Year 2007: An Invitation To Enhance Your Life

I read Rajesh Setty’s post on Quought for the Day and wanted to contribute to his series. In this post’s he asks, “what is the ONE important question a person should ask himself or herself in 2007?”

At the time of reading his post, I had many questions! It has taken me a couple of days to limit it ONE! And here it is. (Drum roll please!)

What things will you Ctrl-Alt-Del for the year 2007, in order to enhance your life?

Control
“Mines of power lie unexplored within you. You use this power unconsciously in all things you do, and you achieve certain results; But if you learn to consciously control and use the power within you, you can accomplish much more.” ~ Paramahansa Yogananda (1893-1952)

There are lots of things we have to do and there are loads of things we want to do, however we are limited to 24 hour days. (which includes eating and sleeping as well!) I have often felt that with each passing year the “pace of life” too, increases proportionately. Do you feel the same? If so, what are the things/areas you can control, in order to enhance your life?

Alternate
“Know how to choose. Most things in life depend on it. You need good taste and an upright judgment; intelligence and application are not enough. There is no perfection without discernment and selection. Two talents are involved: choosing and choosing the best. There are many people with a fertile, subtle intelligence, rigorous judgment, both diligent and well informed, who are lost when they have to choose. They always choose the worst, as though they wanted to show their skill at doing so. Knowing how to choose is one of heaven’s greatest gifts.” - Baltasar Gracian, The Art of Worldly Wisdom

If I were to ask you, “When was the last time, you did something for the first time?” I wonder how many of you would actually have an answer. Yes, we have choices. Are you aware of all your choices? Are you happy where you are? Are you willing to make your life, less monotonous?
So what are the things/areas you can alternate, in order to enhance your life?

Delete
Often in life, we put up with a lot of things, we really don’t have to. If there is something/someone in your life you do not want, it is about time to find the cause and remove it.

Or, it may be as simple ( and complicated!) as forgiving yourself.
Anger, hate, Nail biting, smoking, alcohol etc. What’s your delete list?

So, I ask once again, “What things will you Ctrl-Alt-Del for the year 2007, in order to enhance your life?” Your comments are welcome.

Happy New Year

This is my first post for the year, and let me officially begin it by wishing you …..
Let there be happiness at your door,
May it knock early and stay late.
May Peace, Love, Joy and Good Health be with you and your family.

Wishing you a fantastic New Year 2007!
Shamelle
