Human Rights Day 2011: Church of Scientology Spearheading Human Rights Education

Human rights are the rights that belong to everyone without exception—topeople of any color, creed, age, ethnicity or gender. But as United NationsSecretary-General Ban Ki-Moon pointed out in his Human Rights Day message thisyear, “…unless we know them, unless we demand they be respected, and unless wedefend our rights — and the right of others — to exercise them, they will beTo make the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rightsknown to all, the Church of Scientology has undertaken a massive human rightseducation initiative, reaching more than 180 million people in 2011 with theinformation on human rights in 17 languages.

The United Nations estimates that 2.45 million people are trafficked eachyear, nearly a billion live in hunger, and almost half the world’s populationsubsists on less than $2.50 a day, making it clear any momentum generated thisyear must continue and that education and insistence on human rights has neverbeen more vital. In a global demonstration of support for the Universal Declaration of HumanRights and its 30 rights, Scientology Churches and Missions marked Human Rights
Day with seminars, rallies, concerts, round tables, forums and festivals, andhelped organize more than 80 human rights walks in 26 countries to raiseawareness of the Declaration and the need for its full implementation. In 1969, L. Ron Hubbard wrote, “The United Nations came up with the answer. An absence of human rights stained the hands of governments and threatened theirrules. Very few governments have implemented any part of the UniversalDeclaration of Human Rights. These governments have not grasped that their verysurvival depends utterly upon adopting such reforms and thus giving theirpeoples a cause, a civilization worth supporting, worth their patriotism.”For more than four decades, the Church has worked to make the UniversalDeclaration of Human Rights broadly known. The Declaration appeared in the firstedition of Freedom Magazine, the Church’s human rights journal, in 1968. In1998, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Declaration, the Churchcarried out the first of five annual cross-European marathons, reaching anestimated 33 million with its message in support of human rights.Ten years ago, the Church began publishing materials that present theUniversal Declaration of Human Rights in terms anyone can understand. Thesebooklets, award-winning public service announcements and human rightsdocumentary videos are available free of charge to any individual or group.“There are many examples in history of what individuals can accomplish bydemanding their rights and insisting on the rights of others,” says Rev. RobertAdams, Vice President of the Church of Scientology International. “But aknowledge of these rights comes first. The United Nations adopted the UniversalDeclaration of Human Rights in 1948, yet in many ways, despite advances, theviolations of its articles are as abhorrent today as they were six decades ago.We work with many dedicated groups, organizations, agencies and governmentbodies to make human rights a reality. To achieve this goal, education in humanrights must be mandatory, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights must begiven the force of law.”
Since Human Rights Day 2010, through direct action and sponsorship of activities and materials, the Church of Scientology has reached hundreds ofmillions of people with humans rights information, distributing more than 2million publications and providing educational materials to more than 45,000human rights organizations and 4,500 educators and educational institutions.

Youth for Human Rights International

"The YHRI World Tour moved on from Congo to Nairobi to Kenya. We were met by the YHRI national representative for Uganda, the YHRI rep for East Congo and the Executive Director of the Nairobi Scientology Mission, Esther Macharia.

One of our first visits in Nairobi was with the executives of the African Girl and Boy Scouts, which is the biggest youth movement in Africa, with a total of 38,000 scouts across the African continent.

They declared that the PSAs are exactly what they need and want to incorporate the YHRI activities into their program before the upcoming Jamboree this August!"

London Human Rights Leaders Recognised

David Chen of BEN TV with his Human Rights Ambassador Award and Mary Shuttleworth
2007-06-15 00:23:51 - Youth for Human Rights International World Tour 2007 Comes to London

An international human rights education and campaigning group this week visited London as part of its 2007 World Tour. The Founder & President of Youth for Human Rights International, Mary Shuttleworth met with human rights leaders and addressed dignitaries and human rights advocates at an event on Wednesday 30th May, hosted by the Church of Scientology London.

At the event were representatives of different organisations interested in forwarding this message to educate people about what their human rights are as by survey around 90% don't actually know.

Speaking at the event was Simon Chorley of Stop the Traffik, 'it is obscene that whereas men used to be the main targets, it is now women and children, with 80% of trafficking victims being female and over half being children-.

Simon enlightened the audience on the hard facts about human trafficking today, now with more people being trafficked than at the time of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Human rights ambassador awards were given to individuals for their achievements in ensuring human rights are known about and actually implemented.

David Chen of BEN TV is a pioneer in the field of human rights in a number of ways from airing human rights public service announcements on his TV program to the grass roots level of bringing communities together. Along any avenue possible David is involved in increasing awareness about human rights and making the world a more peaceful place.

Solicitor Richard Clifford has for several years been representing the Chagossian Islanders, who were evicted from their Indian Ocean islands in the 60s. He has won a series of victories in the courts, all with the aim of enabling the islanders to return to their homeland. Richard entitled a paper he wrote about the ongoing case in 2004, 'Chagos Islands - The Land Where Human Rights Hardly Ever Happen.- In addressing the audience on Wednesday, Richard described how in the 1960's & 70's the peoples of the Chagos Archipelago were illegally evicted by Britain so the main island could be leased to the United States, and their long-running campaign to be allowed to return home - a goal that is now much closer to being realised.

Another award winner was 20-year-old racing driver Niki Lanik. Niki made a flying start to his racing career, winning the 2006 Winter Club Clio Championship. After seeing the importance of educating youth on human rights, he races under the banner of Youth for Human Rights, promoting the human rights message in every race, to 100s of thousands through TV coverage.

As 2007 moves on, all who attended agreed to collaborate and work on making human rights a reality.

The purpose of Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) is very simple - to teach youth about human rights, specifically the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and inspire them to become advocates for tolerance and peace.

When children do not know their rights they are vulnerable. Millions of children have become victims of poverty, HIV/AIDS and human trafficking. In all parts of the inhabited world, children are at risk. Knowledge of their human rights can empower young people to defend themselves and help others.

As humanitarian and founder of the Scientology religion, L Ron Hubbard, once stated, 'Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream-.
